Urban drama character deconstruction

Urban Drama character deconstruction

First character: Main protagonist in film Trainspotting-

In the picture above we can see the main protagonist of trainspotting. He is a gang member whom takes part in criminal activities that are drug and gang related. His clothing (His dirty vest) is a direct representation of the struggles in his life such as not having a good education and having low income which suggests why he sells drugs. The conventions of a drug dealer are normally a strong willed and independent man whom is violent and strong in order to support his lifestyle. However this character subverts this as he is weak and skinny and his face looks washed and drained.

Second character: Main characters in film Pineapple express-

The character on the left is a weed enthusiast/drug dealer and the character on the right is a letter deliverer in an office. The drug dealer is wearing a stereotypical 'pothead outfit' with the vintage tribal trousers and long sleeve shirt that look old suggesting he is too lazy to change his outfit or can't afford to do so. The character on the left looks like a businessman due to the suit however only delivers letters. His suit is wrinkled and with drips of liquid along it suggests he is not a well nourished or in a position of high status. The conventions of these drug users are subverted due to them both being unintelligent, dopey, and not strong minded.

Third character: Main character in film Anuvahood -

The character on the right is Kay who is the main character of the British urban comedy 'Anuvahood'. This movie subverts the common conventions of urban dramas, as it parodies the story-line and common structures of them. This is because it is a comedy and adds more of a humorous aspect to the narrative. Kay's character is trying to be a 'gangster' but subverts all of the stereotypes of one as he is short, skinny, weak and sensitive; which adds irony to the film as he is the complete opposite of a gangster but is trying to become one. In the film we see a scene where Kay is listening to some pop music but when his friend walks in the room he changes it to rap music, this shows how far he goes to try and be accepted into gang culture.
