Deconstruction of genre

Genre Deconstruction - Action

Kick-Ass is a 2010 British-American independent superhero black comedy film based on the comic book of the same name by Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr. It tells the story of an ordinary teenager, Dave Lizewski who sets out to become a real-life superhero, calling himself "Kick-Ass". Dave gets caught up in a bigger fight when he meets Big Daddy, a former cop who, in his quest to bring down the crime boss Frank D'Amico and his son, has trained his eleven-year-old daughter to be the ruthless vigilante Hit-Girl. The film is an action film and is set in the inner city

Characters and location -

  • The characters in action  adventure films tend to be believable despite the wild action around
  • time periods are stereotypically in the not to distant past
  • the main protagonist who tends to be man who is quite mainly
  • he is always a good guy and has group who help him to do tasks
  • humorous dialogue is often used to diffuse the situation
  • there is always danger around and violence is seen a lot
  • exotic locations and high octane chaises or often seen
In kick ass some of these are evident, the main character is believable to an extent in what he does and how he hones is skills, it is in the same time period and the main character is a man. he also has a group of people who help him out. Normally the main character is the strongest and best but in this case this is not the case which subverts the generic convention as a little girl clearly has more skills and dominates kick ass. There are also high octane chases and fights seen in the film.

Mis en scene and narrative -
  • weapons are seen through the movie and are used to kill and fight with
  • cars motorbikes and other modes of transport are used for chases
  • fighting between characters is seen in every action film
  • Killings are seen in narratives, death of love ones to henchmen
  • There is often massive destruction and over excess of violence
  • Both good guys and bad guys  who both have a motive for actions
In kick ass all of these are seen. The narrative of the plot is a kick ass helping a girl and a dad take down a gang boss because of there reign and effect on the country amd there aggressive tendencies. They use mutlit weapons to murder henchmen, There are even fatalities from god guys and massive amount of destruction are seen throughout the whole of the movie. there are also high octane chases. this generic conventions are the most common in action films.

 Sound, editing camera -
  • editing is faced pass to keep the action in the seen fast and dramatic
  • wide variety of camera shots are used to keep scene interesting
  • loud sounds are heard thought-out especially diegetic like gun shots and bangs
  • camera cuts between different shots at increased spreads during peak of violence and chases
this is certainly seen in kick ass. There are very fast scenes where the camera jumps between characters fighting and following gun shots. It is very loud and the whole scene is kept following by the use of these fast cuts. the camera jumps between medium and close shots so everything in the scene can be drown too if needed to.
