Gene Deconstruction- Kidulthood

Kidulthood Teaser Trailer-2.05 minutes

The location of the film is set in an urban area e.g. rundown ghetto and subway being common representations of urban dramas. These locations are seen everyday in peoples lives so therefore don’t want to see establishing shots of council flats and run down estates its not exciting for the audience so only a few are shown. Ladbroke Grove is the main area where is it filmed where crime and violence is more commonly taken place then anywhere else. The few long shots shown the run down location around in which they live in.

This urban drama is a Hood film', media interpretation of the black culture involves things such as gangs associate with  drugs, racism violence, and profanity. In this image a close up shot is used showing a packet of drugs.

The next shows a close up of  young girl smoking.
A girl shown stealing from a shop, she is wearing a hoodie which is a stereotype.
The last image shows a gun, telling the audience there is violence involved, the props used are creating awareness of crime in today's society

The sound throughout the trailer is a boy rapping hip-hop this beat is continued during the whole trailer, it is upbeat keeps audience engaged and focused.  There is added sound effects in the background this consists of a scream and smashing this tells the audience what type of film it is and the it includes violence
Over the top of the music there is also diegetic dialogue, this is where we here that the characters speak in 'slang' they say thrashes such as ‘banggin dem up’ and ‘what you doin chattin bout Elisa like dat’. This is bad language which is often used by the lower class and the viewers therefore look down on them and in disgrace. The language used also gives a bad impression and characterises today's youth.
The colours used throughout the film are very dark and sinister the audience don’t know what is going to happen next e.g. fight to breakout. The colours also represent the type of life they have being boring and depressing, that characters don’t have bright future and have gone through dark times which is shown in the lighting.
Status class and ethnicity are very important aspects of an urban drama. The characters are shown to be lower class through their tracksuits hoodies council house. The costumes used are very effective which is hooded clothing, tracksuit and trainers representing today's youth and the impression that they cover up when commenting a crime.
This low angled camera shot of the boys beating up someone shows us that they have power and may seem threatening for a viewer as well as being in a gang.

The trailer didn’t show off many  long or establishing shots of  houses or the area meaning they have nothing to show off to the audience giving the impression that they are ashamed of their lifestyle and background. We can see from this long shot where grown up which is in West London. The shots we do see of the area are making the rich look more desirable and lower class undesirable the Marxist theory. The lack of close ups used within the trailer gives us the impression that they have something to hide or ashamed from their area of life.

The film takes realistic interpretation on society  this is shown through drug dealing fights in societies which people live in.

It also explains social issues for example a close up is shown of a girl holding her stomach telling the audience she is going to have a teenage pregnancy adding drama to the film. The film also expresses how per pressure can effect a teenagers life and cause them to have a dangerous life style. The film is clearly aimed at  15-24  as the main characters are teenagers and explain what teens go through, the trailer gives an inside look on today's youth and express that you should chose your own path in life.

In the film a multiracial cast is used mainly black, the main characters are black within their group however one is white but dresses the same as the others telling us that his skin colour doesn't stop him from what group which he can be in. Most of the cast are teenagers we therefore then assume that all teenagers are like this, this builds up a stereotype explained by Marxist theory. The trailer shows a lot of fights and violence which makes the film more dramatic and entertaining and so that the audience will keep on watching.

By deconstructing this trailer I am able to get a clearer understanding on Urban Drama films, this is helpful as we are considering doing an urban drama for our trailer and now can see what will be needed within it.
