Urban drama and urban drama comedy pros and cons 

Urban drama:

Urban drama films are known for their realistic interpretation of society and their ability to express views on social issues. Urban dramas are stereo-typically set as 'Hood Films' which show the medias interpretation of the 'Black culture' which involves aspects of the ghetto/urban lifestyle in which the film producer normally shares background with. Such aspects involve the representation of: gangs, rap/hip-hop, drugs, racism, police brutality, violence and profanity.  

Common conventions include:

• Use of slang.
• Cast is often multicultural (But often black).
• Operates in economically depressed urban areas.
• Usually a theme of class, status, and or ethnicity.

Some examples of some well-known urban dramas are: 

• Brotherhood(As shown above)
• Kidulthood
• Adulthood 
• Bullet boy
• Victim 
• Straight Outta Compton 
• 8 mile 

Pros of making an urban drama:

• Can be used as a way of shedding light and making awareness of issues in the society.
• Can be used as a good way to make poor communities feel as if they are being listened to, and that they are not alone as other people have been in their situations, which may give them strength to escape their lifestyle. 
• Locations are easy to find as they are urban areas which already exist, which gives it realistic view.

Cons of making an urban drama:

• Subjects such as drugs, violence and gangs can sometimes be glorified and can in-turn influence people into committing crimes that involve these. (They may convey the wrong messages to the viewer)
• Producers that do not come from an urban drama may twist the reality of actual happenings in the 'hood'. 

Urban drama comedy:On the other hand urban drama comedy films are known for their comedic interpretation of the urban dramas.Urban drama comedies are a relatively new concept created in the past few years.

Some examples of well-known urban drama comedies are:

• Anuvahood 
• Dear white people
• The players club
• High fidelity 

Pros of making an urban drama comedy:

• Can be used as a way to show the issues in the society in more of a joke filled and positive way.
• Make light of a mostly negative situation.
• Locations are easy to find as they are urban areas which already exist.
• Easy to think of story line as it is normally a parody of an urban drama film.

Cons of making an urban drama comedy:

• It only appeals to people of an urban background as only they will understand the jokes.
• Actors have to be comedians or funny.
• May be difficult to think of jokes and/or punchlines.
